Rocca delle Maciè Chianti Classico 2017
Before start reading this post, I would like to invite you to a have a look at this cartoon by Posy Simmonds which I came across while reading her Literary World.
I have recently came across an article about the price a German citizen, who drinks an average of 20 liters of wine per year, pays for a liter of wine: 3,64€ This same study also indicates that every second bottle of wine is bought at a so-called discounter (Lidl, Aldi, Netto, Penny) being Aldi the biggest wine retailer in Germany. This raises quite some earnest concerns to the ones working in the wine sector in Germany.
That is the case of a small family business close to me. With a bit more than 100 years on the wine business, the Weinhaus Reimer in Wandsbek Markt will be closing doors till the end of this year.
I know it is quite an easy thing to fall into clichés like the one portrayed by Simmonds in the cartoon with which I have started this post, but there is some kind of deep sadness to see this sort of shops disappearing from the shopping miles around the city.
In a sort of personal goodbye, I went there the other day, getting this amazing Chianti that we also have for sale where I work. Being the 2017 harvest, it revealed to be in an optimal ripeness, with deep garnet fruits and slightly bloody in its consistency, showing a well matured Sangiovese and with a slight touch of Merlot which confers some light fruitness and freshness to it.
It basically shows how fascinating and intense Chiantis can be and how it is a kind of a wine that I am always more than willing to go back to.
Unfortunately, I will not manage to back to Weinhaus Reimer as they have just closed a century of history on wine trading in Hamburg.
