Sentiero delle Gerle 2023
The other day I have found myself wondering which wine I needed to buy.
Even though the answer, on a first level, seemed quite obvious to me that I did not need any more wine as my basement is considerably full and I am drinking considerably little at home these days.
Still, I thought that a white Etna wine was missing in my collection as it is something that I always like to go back to. And what about an Alvarinho from Rheinessen? That can be quite an interesting thing to try and trick close friends on a coming tasting.
This confers my wine collection an almost library feeling to it.
But unlike what happens with books, at least with mine that I have an almost existential problem about getting rid off any book that has entered the premises independently whether I have read it or not, with wines I do end up drinking them and acquiring new ones giving the feeling of a living entity to my enoteca ( I am terribly sorry about this but the feeble translation as "wine collection" does not really fill what I fully mean with the Latin word enoteca as directly correlated to "biblioteca" / library).Just like what happens with my books, I did have a time that I have faithfully catalogued all of my books (as well as the ones at my mother's place) as well as my wines meticulously updating every small change.
Unfortunately, multiple apartment moves in the last two years have made me break this habit but I am slowly getting strength back to do it again.
What I have really decided to go back again was to a white Etna. After having recently tried a couple at a Smart Wines event in Hamburg I have been feeling like having it accompanying a meal.
And that is where this Sentiero delle Gerle comes into play. 100% Carricante, this is a wine with vibrant minerality and very fine citrus notes along with white flowers. It is incredibly fresh and elegant making it a perfect pairing for sea food and more delicate plates such as a lemon and artichoke risotto. I know it is the pure power of suggestion, but I could almost say that there is a light sulfur note to it which reminds me of my times back to when I was living in Tenerife.
The volcanic soils are, for me, one of the most fascinating kind that exists, and all the living forms that can grow there are a pure expression of the power of nature. In the case of wine it often offers fascinating results such as this Carricante.
Now that I have opened it, I have the urge of buying another Etna white in order to fill that gap in my enoteca.
