3 Finger Jack Zinfandel old vine

 As I have started reading A Propos of Nothing the autobiographical work by Woody Allen I started thinking which wine could I have in order to perfectly accompany the reading. I know that this may sound too extreme, but for me it is somehow impossible to separate the pleasure of a good read from all the pleasures you can have around: cozy light, the right room temperature, comfortable position and a wine that may reflect the content of what I am reading.

Being perfectly aware of how much of an obvious choice this wine may have been (American author = American wine) , I have given a but more thought to it than it may seem.

Just like an old vine, going back to Woody Allen is a mix of a look into the past (in my case a very personal one) but also a safe choice of knowing that this is something special which reflects almost in perfection the specificity of a place. And that is what happens with Woody Allen. Even though he has in the last years made films in different European cities he still is a reflection of Manhattan and that is something that gets even clearer in this book.

Like a wine there are some pretty inebriating moments where happiness, melancholy and pure introspection seem to live pretty well with each other.

As a wine, this Zinfandel, which in Europe is known as Primitivo, reveals a very strong character allied with the fruity notes typical of the grape such as very ripe berries. Specially interesting is a light smoky taste which gives the wine a very deep feeling in the mouth, inviting for stronger winter meals.

 The same way as Woody Allen's writing, this is a safe wine that arises in us the wish to come back to it and keep on tasting how it keeps on developing.

 There are grapes which tend to be seen as not prestigious as others.  Müller-Thurgau is, somehow, one of them. Guado al Tasso 2021

 Last Tuesday I was at a wine fair promoted by one of the biggest German wine importers at one of the premium hotels in Hamburg. With a strong focus on gastronomy and small shops it was quite a mixed public, quite different in many ways to the habitués of masterclasses. Besides the tremendous offer, there was a couple of episodes which are still living inside me and that I would like to share.  The first one, I was at a South African stand and a man behind me pushed me and screamed to the person behind the stand that he wanted to try the Shyraz. I have quickly shared with him that he should try the amazing Pinotage before the Shyraz as it was surprisingly light and fruit driven. AOP Maury Ambré Louanges 1932 Chateau de L'Ou

 How important is the history of a wine? Even though I always assume the challenge of trying to be impartial in my personal evaluation of a wine, I also have to confess that I barely achieve such goal as I tend to let myself seduce by all kinds of extra information which may influence my tasting. I am just too sensitive to the worlds you can build around a particular world which is a bottle of wine. Going directly to the wine in question, the fact that it was a 1932 harvest has directly awoken in me an almost uncontrollable world of expectations. Tasted at a recent event of Wines of Roussillon in Hamburg it came as the biggest highlight of a very eventful evening.  Composed of Grenache Gris and Grenache Blanc it has revealed nice dried apricots, dates and some bitter almonds coated by an acidity which imposed a tremendous freshness to a wine which is over 90 years old.  In a way, it presented itself fresher than a 2002 tasted right before.
