Bathoreu Trincadeira 2023
The gothic idyllic location of Convento de Sao Francisco in Santarém was chosen to host the 8th edition of Tejo a Copo where 28 producers of the Tejo region were given the opportunity to show their work.
Being born in Santarém, for me it was a great opportunity to come across what's happening in the region where I was born.
Even though there were quite some wines which still tended to show an old fashioned and sort of boring expression by the use and abuse of international grapes that do not really reflect the specificities of a fascinating terroir, there were also some really good and fresh winds of change.
Among some really interesting late harvests, sparklings or low intervention wines, there were also the ones which, in my opinion, have managed to reflect the different sub regions of Tejo.
One of them was this Bathoreu Trincadeira 2023.
Juicy and elegant with dominant black berries it has also presented some fascinating freshness, promising a good evolution in the bottle.
After having tasted it at the wine fair, I ended up getting a bottle for myself.
In fact I thought twice whether to leave the bottle at my mom's place and rediscover it in a couple of years, or relive in a quieter environment one of my highlights of the wine fair.
Having opted for the second, it played a perfect pairing for a family classic duck rice, definitely enriching the whole gastronomic experience. There is a reason why my mother's duck rice is a classic...
I have recently been rediscovering Trincadeira, also known as Tinta Amarela in the Douro region, as one of my favourite grapes due to its capacity of bringing very balanced fruits along with well proportioned acidity.
This Bathoreu 2023 is a good example of it as well as of a very specific Tejo terroir already on the border to the Lisboa one where the influence from the Atlantic is more noticeable.
By the way, I was also positively impressed with their Castelao as a good expression of a grape that I believe it can have a bright future ahead.
