Cuvée Monsignori Santorini 2019

Sideways has set a before and after of my relationship with wine. 

It was around 2008 when I have first seen it and I still clearly remember what I have done afterwards: went to buy wine and along with two friends we have dedicated ourselves to cooking and drinking in some kind of inner euphoria that has lasted for quite some hours.

From all the scenes which later became rather iconic, there is one which often invades my thoughts: the end of the discussion between both friends when Jack says to Paul that he will never find the perfect occasion to drink the perfect wines he has been collecting.

As a consequence Paul ends up drinking a pretty expensive wine at some fast food restaurant.

From that moment on I have made an subconscious decision to open wines that I have been reserving for special events in absolutely normal days. 

And that is what I have done with this Cuvée Monsignori from Santorini.

On an absolutely normal Tuesday I have invited two good friends over for dinner and this was the wine selected to accompany a fresh almond soup.

Made out of, at least, two hundred year old vines this was the most tremendous expression of assyrtiko that I ever had. 

Tremendously mineral, fresh, delicate citrus and flowery notes this was a unique experience that has enriched the meal to an almost perfect pleasure moment. The 14,5% alcohol was more than well integrated and there was not a single time that I have found it too much, even taking in account that was accompanying a rather delicate soup. 

The following day I could still feel my mind intensively active due to the whole experience that this wine has given me. And this has somehow helped me going through seeing a newly built shelf falling apart with some of my wines on it and literally flooding mine and my neighbour's  basement with wine. 

I do am glad I had the opportunity to still try it before such a disaster.  

Somehow this normal Tuesday was just the perfect moment to have it.

 When a product is particularly cheap Germans often use the expression "it's a fair price" to refer to it.  Being a non native German speaker, the question that often invades me is : Fair to whom? To the farmer? To the winemaker? To the transport people? To me who is selling you the bottle, to the labeling team, the marketing, the pickers, and the list could go on almost without an end. Certain is just that this expression annoys me to an unimaginable extent. The answer is quite obvious that it is fair for the customer as it gives them the feeling of saving money. Quinta da Fata Encruzado Crú 2021

 It is now a couple of months that I am getting a newsletter from a wine shop where a wine from this winery is wrongly written. Fara insted of Fata may seem, and it sure is, a simple typing mistake, but week after week it seems to me rather sloven as if no care is being paid to it. Another example is on this flyer that I have found at a shop where there's a picture of a Shyraz bottle, with a title of a GSM and as a grape it is given Cabernet Sauvignon. Puzzling, to say the least. What about the following?  A complete disconnection between image and content. A wine from Valencia with the description of a Portuguese Vinho Verde. I believe no further comments are needed.  Having recently been busy ordering wine online for a wedding to which I was responsible to do the wine pairing I have come across countless mistakes and texts which varied from a lyrical romanticism to pure carelessness in order to try to feed people's fantasies about what wine really is in a strange cock...
