Kloster Pforta Bacchus 2020

Living in Germany has opened my senses to completely different kinds of grapes that you hardly find anywhere else and which can express in a rather unique way singular terroirs which can go further than the consecrated Mosel or Rheinessen.

In the case of this Kloster Pforta I was taken to the very heart of Saale-Unstrut in the Eastern part of Germany and home to some of the best wines that are produced in the country.

I have to confess that one of the grapes that has awaken my interest from the beginning due to its name was Bacchus. As I moved to Germany I was positively surprised by it as it often reveals strong tropical fruits notes reminding me of some sort of stronger Alvarinho without so much minerality.

And that's exactly what happened with this wine: in the mouth we are offered some marvellously round passion fruit with pineapple along with some sweet apricots transforming it into a wine that arises our curiosity on how such a complexity of tastes can develop into an harmonious construction.

I have to say that it has matched in an extraordinary way the tomato rice and fried sardines that I have cooked in an attempt to make the distance between Hamburg and Portugal a bit smaller now that the cold temperatures seem to be here to stay.

With it and in order to keep on feeding this deep missing of Portugal, I would recommend some Pessoa:

I am tired, that is clear,
Because, at certain stage, people have to be tired.
Of what I am tired, I don't know:
It would not serve me at all to know
Since the tiredness stays just the same.
The wound hurts as it hurts
And not in function of the cause that produced it.
Yes, I am tired,
And ever so slightly smiling
At the tiredness being only this -
In the body a wish for sleep,
In the soul a desire for not thinking
And, to crown all, a luminous transparency
Of the retrospective understanding…
And the one luxury of not now having hopes?
I am intelligent: that's all.
I have seen much and understood much of what I
have seen.
And there is a certain pleasure even in tiredness
this brings us,
That in the end the head does still serve for
something.
